Argiope in Triplicate

It was a fine misty morning when it first occurred to me to capture our spectacular writing spider on film - just after she enlarged her script in fact. This was some odd weeks after her first arrival and has been her chosen spot since her first move perhaps ten days ago. She seems to be thriving in this new location and I am looking forward to seeing what new designs she’ll share with us. Or perhaps just me, since DH is rather put off by her presence.

So there has been some distress over my announcement to photojournal (can I use that as a verb?) the life and times of the writing spider in our backyard. See my original post here. I am absolutely fascinated by her goings on so far, though, so I do plan to go forward with the spidery postings. However, for anyone who is simply too creeped out by such leggy critters, I will tag each one with “spider watch 2013” if you would like to block those posts. I promise I won’t hold it against you. :)

So my darling husband has been eyeing this little beauty for the last couple weeks, periodically exclaiming that she’s doubled in size. There is a possibility that she has, in fact, grown that much since she first arrived, but I (regretfully) did not think to measure her progress until today. And so begins a photojournal of sorts, documenting the stay of this striking arachnid in the upper right hand corner of our patio door.

Thanks! I had to bust out the telescopic lens to get such a great closeup shot - he just wouldn’t let me get close enough otherwise!

Oh wow, those are beautiful. I wish I had time and patience to get good at wirework! It has not been my friend, the few times I’ve tried.

I haven’t had a lot of luck either, but I never had really awesome wire to work with either!

The design differences between brands of crochet hooks can effect the finished crochet project. I find that Susan Bates brand hooks have a deeper recess in the hook portion itself which allows for tighter stitches, especially when working on Amigurumi projects. When using Boye brand, I find that the yarn slips from the hook more easily, which isn’t always desirable for tight stitches. For me, Susan Bates brand hooks are better for more delicate stitches.

Top picture: The fuchsia and blue hooks are both size 5mm, but the Boye brand hook makes larger stitches.

Sorry for the blurry pictures, my camera is not playing nicely today.

Also, letter sizing is not uniform across hook brands. I would never suggest picking up a new hook to finish a WIP unless you knew the mm size.

I don’t have much experience with Susan Bates hooks, but what little I have was extremely frustrating. I found that sharp edges of the hook regularly split my yarn. Has anyone else had that problem?
